Surprise Zone

The thickest three-dimensional makeup is Chutti, unique to the southwest Indian Kathakali dance-theatre tradition. The villainous Redbeard characters have mask-like attachments that are built up using rice paste and paper and which extend 6 in (15 cm) from the face. The makeup takes hours to apply and the colors used, together with the styles of the costumes, denote the different nature of each of the characters.
