stone circles of Avebury

The 28.4-acre (11.5-hectare) earthworks and stone circles of Avebury, Wiltshire, UK, which were ’rediscovered’ in 1646, represent the UK’s largest prehistoric monument and largest henge (a circular area, often containing a circle of stones or wooden posts). The earliest calibrated date in the area of this Neolithic site is ca. 4200 BC. The work is 1,200 ft (365 m) in diameter and a ditch 40 ft (12 m) wide around the perimeter.
